Back in the day, not having a border on a sig was a major no-no.  With the development of sig designing, this theory has left.  Most modern designers prefer no borders at all or a more complex, thick border. 1px black borders are no more. They kill the flow of a sig and are very distracting. Click more for examples.

 Thick and complex:

Rounding corners has become more popular over the years. This can be done with or without a border.

Widescreen borders can work very well with certain sigs. Some people also make a widescreen border and leave either the top or the bottom out.

Using the displace filter set on tile can create some very interesting borders.

In the end if your creative and ask for criticism on your borders, you will become very good at it. If in doubt go without a border.

Could you help me out with making rounded edges?

  2. Buck Says:

what you do is, use the rounded rectangle tool (next to the pen tool) then make your edges about 5 px. Once you have selected all that you make the rectangle. Then make a new layer and ctrl click the rectangle you made (its makes and outline of the rectangle), then click the “select” on top and hit “inverse. No color that selection any color you want. Delete the rectange you made and you got it :).
